I feel this is an outstanding book on several levels. It is medically accurate. It explains medical terms and conditions clearly and avoids both medical "jargon" and oversimplification. The writer is able to convey the realities and challenges of raising children with autism in a way that could only be achieved by a parent who has "been and done." It is a book that will touch and teach anyone who reads it. It is a beacon of empathy and reassurance to parents and family of children with autism. It acknowledges that the road ahead will be long and difficult in many places, and yet studded with times of unexpected and unforeseeable beauty and joy. In this way it put me in mind of a description of hiking the Appalachian Trail.
For professionals, it is a reminder of what these families have to deal with on a day-to-day basis beyond the clinical appointments, the testing, the therapy interventions, the intensive ongoing home care that is prescribed, and all of the other things that are prescribed in an effort to help. In her matter-of-fact accounts of the day-to-day facts of life for her and her children, she reminds us of the challenges of everyday life that may not be not considered (or may be forgotten) by those who don't have to get "up close and personal" with autism 24/7.
This book documents the grace, kindness, dignity and understanding that families of autistic children must demonstrate on a daily basis to those members of the general public who through word and action can so readily demonstrate their own ignorance, insensitivity and even cruelty in their interactions with autistic children and their families.
Above all, this book is a testament to importance of loving parenting. It highlights the central tenet of unconditional love. It alludes to the fact that children with autism, like all children, are doing the best they can, generally behave exactly the way they are taught, and can feel and respond to love. The author acknowledges the frustrations, failings and fatigue that every parent feels at some time or other, and she suggests to the reader that experiencing failure is not the same as being a failure. She acknowledges the importance of her faith. She conveys the story of her family without any sense of self-pity or resignation. but rather with an attitude of confidence and reassurance that is inspirational and refreshing. I feel this book would be beneficial reading to anyone who is or might someday find themselves dealing with autism--in short, anyone at all.

Occupation therapist thinks book is a must read for parents--all parents!

As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, I have tried to show parents of my clients that first off- they have a child that requires parenting like any other child- which includes schedules, limits, help with eating dressing, bathing, hygiene, and manners, playtime and bedtime. It is an exhausting job. But, special needs children will need additional support, help and understanding.
Delia Samuel has written the parenting manual that captures this important concept. In fact, I think all parents can benefit from her 45 chapters especially-Take Time Outs-- You Will Need Them, Play, Play and Play Some More, and Practice Does Make Perfect.
From an occupational therapist perspective, the most important chapter, besides Sensory Problems, is My Journey To Acceptance. This is an important insight and one that takes time to reach. I have worked with parents in denial, angry parents, depressed parents and with those that had reached acceptance of their child’s special qualities. I never commented to the parents on their attitudes, as I knew they were dealing with a life changing realization at their own pace. But, the parents who had reached the acceptance level, not only had more secure children but could tap into their intuition, based on knowing their child better than anyone else, and work with me in partnership setting up creative strategies to help their children develop skills.
This is an important parenting guide for parents of special needs children written by someone who has and does live it -- as a single working mother raising her own two special sons. I highly recommend this book to parents of not only children of special needs or autistic children but to all parents because each child is special in some way, some just more so.

This book is a beautifully honest window into the day-to-day challenges of caring for children with special needs; however, it has the capability to bless anyone that picks it up. It is a story of hope, faith, and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges. It will bring tears and laughter – sometimes in the same chapter - but most importantly, it will inspire you.
The book can be read straight through or even a chapter a day for strategies, pick-me-ups, and gentle reminders to never give up on yourself or those you love. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter – they are simple, yet beautiful mantras to live by. This story truly embodies Dan Reeves’ quote: “Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter.”
The author has poured her heart into these pages and courageously shared her struggles and triumphs. She has opened the floor for honest discussion and hopefully change in a subject that demands our attention. It is past time we start understanding and demonstrating the love and acceptance that children of special needs require – whether it be in our families, our schools, or the general public. This amazing story is an excellent step in that direction and a refreshing account of unconditional love.
